How I Learned More About Self-Awareness and Growth Than I Ever Did In Class: My Children Were My Teachers

In order to advance in our careers, we often turn to formal education in the form of business or technical degrees and certificates. We supplement these with some HR-related courses. All of these are great options.

Another channel through which I have found to improve myself is my children. I could probably make a case that I learned more from them than I have from in-class formal training.

I've learned a lot from the honest feedback I've received from them. We have a relationship where we are always looking for and giving feedback to each other. And this has helped me grow. As a result, I've learned a lot about how I'm perceived by others versus how I think others perceive me. It has allowed me to adjust my approach. View things differently. Try different things.

For example, I was on a call with a few friends discussing some matters. I was on the speakerphone and my daughter was beside me. At the conclusion of the call, I asked her what she thought. And boy did she have a lot to say. From my tone to my choice of words, to repeating myself with the same point multiple times, to my harshness, etc. I was so focused on the call and problem solving, that I was not aware of how I was perceived. While I thought I did well, others may have thought I was coming down on them. Which was not the intent.

I'm grateful to my children for being such great teachers. They've taught me more than I ever could have learned in a classroom. And I know that I'll continue to learn from them as they grow up.

If you're looking for an unconventional way to learn more about yourself, consider your children as your teachers. You might be surprised at what you can learn from them.

Where do you get your learnings from? Formal education or from anywhere you can find it?
